VESTAVIA HILLS — The Albertville varsity softball team enjoyed what head coach Paul Woodruff described as an “awesome weekend” in the Red and Blue Classic.

The Lady Aggies (17-2) reached the semifinals of the event, where they fell to eventual champion Dothan, which is ranked No. 2 in Class 6A.

Madi Bruce, an eighth-grader, batted .533 with two doubles and three RBIs to power Albertville’s hitters.

Freshman Emily Woodruff batted .500 with a double, triple and five stolen bases.

Torrea Talton hit .467 with two doubles and three RBIs while Katlin Light hit .429 with three RBIs.

“Peighton (Ponder) and Torrea (Talton) were awesome in the circle, we made some great plays on defense and we hit .320 as a team for the tournament,” Paul Woodruff said.

“We beat the No. 5 (Vestavia Hills) and No. 6 (Oak Mountain) teams in 6A, then lost in the semifinals to the No.  2 team in 6A, who was the eventual champion.

“Madeline Munroe and Erin Stewart are a couple of names that won’t show up on the stat sheet because they didn’t swing this weekend, but they need to be mentioned. We got great outfield play from these two, plus Shainna Pearce and Jenna Chandler.

“Our JV team also competed in the JV division of the tournament and played well. They were eliminated in the semifinal game by Hillcrest.

“We had great support from the Aggie softball faithful. Both teams would like to thank those folks who made the trip.”
