The Albertville varsity softball team rallied for six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to stun Southside 9-7 on Thursday in its Class 5A, Area 13 opener.

The game took place at Sheldon Elmore Park.

The Lady Aggies improved to 3-0 overall.

Madi Bruce started Albertville’s rally with a walk. Haley Carnes popped up to first base, but Erin Segers followed with a double off the left-field fence.

Jenna Chandler popped up to first base, putting the Lady Aggies one out away from a loss.

Leadoff batter Brittany Copeland stepped to the plate and smashed a single to left field, scoring Bruce.

Emily Woodruff then doubled into the right-center field gap, driving in Segers and Copeland to pull AHS within 7-6.

Torrea Talton hit a slow roller to the shortstop, who hurried her throw. The ball got away, and Woodruff slid headfirst into home plate, tying the score 7-7.

Cleanup batter Katlin Light stepped to the plate and slugged the first pitch she saw for a walk-off, two-run homer to complete Albertville’s amazing rally.

Copeland and Talton each scored two runs for the Lady Aggies. Woodruff, Light and Bruce all finished with two RBIs.

Talton pitched a complete game to earn the victory. She scattered five hits, walked four and struck out seven.

Albertville committed five errors to Southside’s one.
