Aggies receive great support at state

MONTGOMERY — Albertville Principal Paul McAbee expressed pride in the Lady Aggie softball team and its supporters following Saturday’s season-ending loss to Moody in the Class 5A state tournament.

McAbee and his wife, Karen, were on hand to watch the Lady Aggies, who were making their first state tournament appearance.

“I’m proud of the girls, and I don’t know if anybody in Montgomery had any more fans than Albertville did,” McAbee said.

“Our student body turned out in force, and our parents and friends of parents.

“Paul Woodruff and Rickey Johnson have done an outstanding job, not just this year, they’ve done an outstanding every year. These kids played really hard.

“We came, we won and we’re like all of them but one. I think you have to keep in perspective that when you get to the big dance, only one team is going to leave not crying.

“We had a good year, and you just hate it’s over. Our coaches did a great job with them, and I’m so proud of our fan support and student body.”

Woodruff — Albertville’s head coach — also praised the team’s fans.

“Me and Coach Johnson were super happy about the turnout we had,” Woodruff said.

“The fans, the moms and dads, the kids, people from the community, it was unbelievable.

“Coach Mac said that Coach (Steve) Savarese said he thinks we brought more people down here than anybody.

“We had a great turnout the whole time.”

Savarese is executive director of the Alabama High School Athletic Association.
