MONTGOMERY — Albertville’s first trip to the state high school softball tournament ended today with a loss to Moody.

The Lady Aggies (34-12-1) started the tournament Friday with a victory over Spanish Fort, but Cullman dealt Albertville a 10-0 loss in the nightcap.

That knocked Albertville into the losers’ bracket, where Moody won 4-1 this morning.

Cullman 10, Albertville 0: Elizabeth Buchanan threw a six-inning no-hitter to give the Aggies their first loss of the tournament.

Buchanan struck out seven Albertville batters.

Albertville 1, Spanish Fort 0: Carrie Barton won a pitchers’ duel as Albertville opened with a 1-0 victory Friday.

Barton pitched a one-hitter, striking out 11. Her Spanish Fort counterpart, Morgan Druhan, struck out 15 and allowed two hits.

The Aggies (34-10-1) scored the game’s only run in the first inning.

With one out, Druhan hit Stephanie NeSmith, then McKenzie Peet.

NeSmith advanced to third on a passed ball and slid home on a squeeze bunt by Barton.

Emily Woodruff and Becca Townsend recorded Albertville’s only hits.

Druhan’s one-out double in the second was the only blemish on Barton’s day. Barton later ended the game by striking out Druhan.

Mortimer Jordan escaped the winners’ bracket without a loss. The Blue Devils beat Cullman 8-2 this morning, advancing to the 5:30 p.m. championship game.

Cullman will play the winner of the Spanish Fort-Moody game at 3 p.m. to determine who will meet Mortimer Jordan in the finals.
